Rafflesia è un genere di piante parassitarie fiorite. Esso contiene circa 28 specie, tutte trovate in Asia sudorientale, in Indonesia, Malesia, Borneo, Sumatra, Thailandia e Filippine. Rafflesia è stata trovata nella foresta pluviale indonesiana da una guida indonesiana che lavorava per il dottor Joseph Arnold nel 1818 e prese il nome di Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, leader della spedizione. È stato scoperto ancor prima da Louis Deschamps a Java tra il 1791 e il 1794, ma le sue note e illustrazioni, sequestrate dagli inglesi nel 1803, non erano disponibili alla scienza occidentale fino al 1861. La pianta non ha fusti, foglie o radici vere. È un oloparasite di viti nel genere Tetrastigma, diffondendo l'organo assorbente, l'haustorio, all'interno del tessuto della vite. L'unica parte della pianta che si può vedere al di fuori della vite ospitante è il fiore a cinque petali. In alcune specie, come Rafflesia arnoldii, il fiore può essere di oltre 100 centimetri di diametro e pesare fino a 10 chilogrammi. Anche le specie più piccole, R. baletei, hanno fiori di diametro di 12 cm.
