Nella fisica, il cambiamento rosso avviene quando la luce o altre radiazioni elettromagnetiche da un oggetto vengono aumentate in lunghezza d'onda o spostate verso l'estremità rossa dello spettro. In generale, se la radiazione è all'interno dello spettro visibile, "redder" significa un aumento della lunghezza d'onda equivalente ad una frequenza inferiore e ad una energia fotonica inferiore, in conformità rispettivamente con le onde e le teorie quantistiche della luce. Alcuni spostamenti rossi sono un esempio dell'effetto Doppler, familiare alla variazione delle apparenti tonalità delle sirene e alla frequenza delle onde sonore emesse dai veicoli in accelerazione. Un cambiamento rosso avviene ogni volta che una sorgente luminosa si allontana da un osservatore. Un altro tipo di spostamento rosso è il cambiamento rosso cosmologico, che è dovuto all'espansione dell'universo, e fonti di luce sufficientemente distanti mostrano il ribaltamento corrispondente al tasso di aumento della loro distanza dalla Terra. Infine, i cambi di rosso gravitazionali sono un effetto relativistico osservato in radiazione elettromagnetica che si sposta dai campi gravitazionali.
