Realismo diretto e indiretto
La questione del realismo diretto o "naïve", in contrapposizione al realismo indiretto o "rappresentativo", sorge nella filosofia della percezione e della mente dal dibattito sulla natura dell'esperienza cosciente; La questione epistemologica del fatto che il mondo che vediamo intorno a noi è il mondo reale o semplicemente una copia percettiva interna di quel mondo generato da processi neurali nel nostro cervello. Il realismo naïve è conosciuto come realismo diretto quando sviluppato per contrastare il realismo indiretto o rappresentativo, noto anche come dualismo epistemologico, la posizione filosofica che la nostra esperienza cosciente non è del mondo reale ma di una rappresentazione interna, una replica miniatura virtuale-realtà del mondo. Il realismo indiretto è in larga misura equivalente alla visione accettata della percezione nella scienza naturale che afferma che non possiamo e non possiamo percepire il mondo esterno in quanto è veramente, ma sappiamo solo le nostre idee e le interpretazioni del modo in cui il mondo è. Il rappresentativismo è una delle ipotesi chiave del cognitivismo nella psicologia. Il realista rappresentativo negerebbe che la "conoscenza di prima mano" è un concetto coerente, poiché la conoscenza è sempre con alcuni mezzi.
