Root nodule
Noduli di radice si verificano sulle radici delle piante che si associano ai batteri simbiotici che fissano azoto. In condizioni di limitazione dell'azoto, le piante capaci formano una relazione simbiotica con un ceppo specifico dell'ospite di batteri noto come rhizobia. Questo processo si è evoluto più volte all'interno delle Fabaceae, così come in altre specie che si trovano all'interno del Rosid clade. All'interno dei noduli legumi, il gas azotato dell'atmosfera viene convertito in ammoniaca, che viene poi assimilato in aminoacidi, nucleotidi e altri costituenti cellulari come vitamine, flavoni e ormoni. La loro capacità di fissare l'azoto gassoso rende i legumi un organismo agricolo ideale in quanto la loro richiesta per il fertilizzante azotato è ridotta. Infatti l'elevato contenuto di azoto blocca lo sviluppo del nodulo poiché non vi è alcun beneficio per la pianta di formare la simbiosi. L'energia per la suddivisione del gas azoto nel nodulo deriva dallo zucchero che viene traslocato dalla foglia. Malato come prodotto di rottura del saccarosio è la sorgente di carbonio diretta per il batterioide. La fissazione dell'azoto nel nodulo è molto sensibile all'ossigeno.
