Un filo a vite, spesso accorciato alla filettatura, è una struttura elicoidale utilizzata per convertire tra movimento o forza rotativa e lineare. Un filo a vite è una cresta avvolta attorno ad un cilindro oa un cono sotto forma di elica, con il primo chiamato filo diritto e quest'ultimo chiamato filo conico. Un filo a vite è la caratteristica essenziale della vite come semplice macchina e anche come elemento di fissaggio. Il vantaggio meccanico di un filo a vite dipende dal suo cavo, che è la distanza lineare che la vite porta in un giro. Nella maggior parte delle applicazioni, il cavo di un filetto a vite viene scelto in modo che l'attrito sia sufficiente per impedire che il movimento lineare sia convertito in rotazione, vale a dire che la vite non scivola anche quando la forza lineare viene applicata finché non esiste una forza di rotazione esterna. Questa caratteristica è essenziale per la maggior parte dei suoi usi. Il serraggio di un filetto a vite di fissaggio è paragonabile a guidare un cuneo in un asola fino a bloccarsi rapidamente attraverso l'attrito e la leggera deformazione plastica.
