Bombax
Bombax è un genere di alberi principalmente tropicali della famiglia Mallow. Sono nativi dell'Africa occidentale, del subcontinente indiano, dell'Asia sudorientale, nonché delle regioni subtropicali dell'Asia orientale e dell'Australia settentrionale. Distinguete dal genere Ceiba che ha fiori bianchi. Nomi comuni per il genere includono l'albero di cotone di seta, il simulo, l'albero di cotone rosso, il kapok e semplicemente il bombax. In cinese sono conosciuti come Mumian, il che significa "albero di cotone". Attualmente sono riconosciute quattro specie, anche se molte piante sono state collocate nel genere successivamente spostato. Il genere è meglio conosciuto per la specie B. ceiba, ampiamente coltivata in tutte le regioni tropicali e subtropicali del mondo. È nativo nell'Asia meridionale e orientale e nel nord dell'Australia. Le specie di Bombax vengono utilizzate come piante alimentari dalle larve di alcune specie di Lepidoptera, tra cui il cacciatore minerale Bucculatrix crateracma che alimenta esclusivamente Bombax ceiba. L'albero appare sulla bandiera della Guinea Equatoriale.
