Slieve Donard
Slieve Donard è una montagna di 850 metri nella contea di Down, Irlanda del Nord. Parte delle montagne di Morne, è la vetta più alta nell'Irlanda del Nord e nella più ampia provincia di Ulster. È anche il picco più alto dell'isola d'Irlanda. Slieve Donard si trova vicino alla città di Newcastle, sulla costa orientale della contea di Down, a soli 2 km dal mare irlandese. Il muro di Morne, costruito nei primi anni del XX secolo, corre sui pendii occidentali e meridionali della montagna, unendo una piccola torre in pietra al vertice. Sempre al vertice sono anche i resti di due cairn di sepoltura preistorici, uno dei quali è il resto della più grande tomba di passaggio in Irlanda. Nella mitologia irlandese la montagna è stata associata e chiamata dopo le mitiche figure Boirche e Slángha. Successivamente fu associata e nominata da Saint Donard, che si diceva di aver fatto la vetta al suo eremo. Fino agli anni '30, la gente saliva sulla montagna come parte di un pellegrinaggio annuale, che potrebbe essere stato in origine un rituale di Lughnasad. Gli ingegneri reali hanno accampato sul vertice per quattro mesi nel 1826 come parte della Triangolazione Principale dell'Ordnance Survey.
