Nella scienza dell'informatica, una biblioteca è una raccolta di implementazioni di comportamento, scritte in termini di lingua, che dispongono di un'interfaccia ben definita con cui viene richiamato il comportamento. Ciò significa che finché un programma di livello superiore utilizza una libreria per effettuare chiamate di sistema, non è necessario scrivere nuovamente per implementare queste chiamate di sistema più e più volte. Inoltre, il comportamento viene fornito per il riutilizzo da più programmi indipendenti. Un programma invoca il comportamento fornito dalla libreria tramite un meccanismo della lingua. Ad esempio, in un semplice linguaggio imperativo come C, il comportamento in una libreria viene invocato usando la normale funzione chiamata di C. Ciò che distingue la chiamata come una libreria, rispetto ad un'altra funzione nello stesso programma, è il modo in cui il codice è organizzato nel sistema. Il codice della libreria è organizzato in modo tale da poter essere utilizzato da più programmi che non hanno alcuna connessione tra loro, mentre il codice che fa parte di un programma è organizzato per essere utilizzato solo in quel programma. Questa distinzione può ottenere una nozione gerarchica quando un programma cresce, ad esempio un programma multi-milioni di linee.
