Il termine somatico significa "del corpo" - relativo al corpo distinto dalla mente, dall'anima o dallo spirito. In medicina, la malattia somatica è la malattia corporea, non mentale. Il termine è spesso utilizzato nella biologia per riferirsi alle cellule del corpo in contrasto con le cellule delle linee germinali che solitamente danno origine ai gameti. Queste cellule somatiche sono diploidi contenenti due copie di ogni cromosoma, mentre le cellule germinali sono aposloide in quanto contengono solo una copia di ciascun cromosoma. Anche se in circostanze normali tutte le cellule somatiche in un organismo contengono DNA identico, sviluppano una varietà di caratteristiche specifiche del tessuto. Questo processo si chiama differenziazione, attraverso alterazioni epigenetiche e regolamentari. Il raggruppamento di cellule e tessuti simili crea la base per gli organi. Le mutazioni somatiche sono cambiamenti nella genetica di un organismo multicellulare che non viene trasmesso alla sua prole attraverso la germinazione. Molti tumori sono mutazioni somatiche. Somatico è definito anche come relativo alla parete della cavità del corpo, particolarmente come distinto dalla testa, dagli arti o dalla viscera.
