Il vino spumante è un vino con livelli significativi di anidride carbonica che lo rendono frizzante. L'anidride carbonica può derivare dalla fermentazione naturale, in una bottiglia, come nel caso del méthode champenoise, in un grande serbatoio progettato per resistere alle pressioni coinvolte o come conseguenza dell'iniezione di biossido di carbonio. La maggior parte dei paesi riserva la parola Champagne per un tipo specifico della regione Champagne di Francia. I termini francesi "Mousseux" o "Crémant" sono usati per fare riferimento al vino spumante non prodotto nella regione di Champagne.
