La parola spastica viene utilizzata in modo diverso in base alla posizione geografica del suo utilizzo e alla versione della lingua inglese in uso, che ha portato ad alcune controversie e incomprensioni della natura e dell'adeguatezza della parola. Derivato via latino dal greco spastikos, la parola alla sua radice si riferisce ancora ad una alterazione del tono muscolare colpita dalla spasticità della condizione medica, che si vede in diplegia spastica e in molte altre forme di paralisi cerebrale e anche in termini come "colon spastico ". In questo uso, che è ancora oggi l'ambiente principale della parola, la parola spastica non ha assolutamente nessuna connotazione negativa, perché è esattamente descrittivo della condizione. In India La Società Spastics of India, un'organizzazione no-profit e non governativa, ha mantenuto il suo nome per molti anni senza essere criticato. Colloquialmente, la parola spastica può essere, ma non è necessariamente, pejorative; In gran parte questo dipende dal fatto che si comprende la parola in quanto viene utilizzata negli Stati Uniti o nel Regno Unito.
