L'uso dei simboli e l'ordine delle coordinate differisce tra le fonti. In un sistema spesso riscontrato nella fisica si ottiene la distanza radiale, l'angolo polare e l'angolo azimutale, mentre in un altro sistema utilizzato in molti libri di matematica dà la distanza radiale, l'angolo azimutale e l'angolo polare.
