Le stingray sono un gruppo di raggi, che sono pesci cartilaginei connessi agli squali. Essi sono classificati nel sottomarino Myliobatoidei dell'ordine Myliobatiformes e sono costituiti da otto famiglie: Hexatrygonidae, Plesiobatidae, Urolophidae, Urotrygonidae, Dasyatidae, Potamotrygonidae, Gymnuridae e Myliobatidae. Stingray sono comuni nelle acque marittime tropicali e subtropicali in tutto il mondo, e comprendono anche specie trovate in oceani temperati più caldi, come Dasyatis thetidis e quelli trovati nell'oceano profondo, come Plesiobatis daviesi. Le stingray del fiume, e un certo numero di stingray di whiptail, sono limitate all'acqua dolce.
