Il subordinazione è una dottrina nella teologia cristiana che afferma che il Figlio e lo Spirito Santo sono subordinati a Dio Padre nella natura e nell'essere. Il subordinismo, nelle sue varie forme, era una dottrina antica cristiana fino alla metà del IV secolo, quando la controversia ariana fu definitivamente risolta, dopo molti decenni di dibattiti, con la formulazione della dottrina della Trinità. Il subordinismo ha alcune connessioni con l'arianismo, ma ha alcune differenze. Mentre Arius ei suoi seguaci erano certamente anche subordinatori, gli Ariani andarono ulteriormente affermando che il Figlio, come creatura, è praticamente ignorante del Creatore, l'unico che è stato accettato per avere la piena natura divina secondo l'apopatismo cristiano. La subordinazione prosperava contemporaneamente all'arrianismo (IV secolo dC), ma sopravvissuta a lungo. I suoi protagonisti principali nel quarto secolo furono Eusebio di Cesarea e Eusebio di Nicomedia, entrambi i quali avevano dato un appoggio ad Arius. Atanasio ha combattuto il subordinismo per tutta la sua carriera come vescovo di Alessandria, spesso etichettandolo come arianismo.
