Nella teoria del linguaggio di programmazione, il sottotipo è una forma di polimorfismo di tipo in cui un sottotipo è un tipo di dati che è correlato ad un altro tipo di dati da qualche nozione di sostituibilità, il che significa che gli elementi del programma, tipicamente subroutine o funzioni, scritti per operare su elementi del supertype Operano anche su elementi del sottotipo. Se S è un sottotipo di T, la relazione subtipta è spesso scritta S \u0026 lt ;: T, significa che qualsiasi termine del tipo S può essere utilizzato in modo sicuro in un contesto in cui si prevede un termine di tipo T. La precisa semantica del sottotipo dipende in modo cruciale dalle particolarità di ciò che "usa in sicurezza in un contesto dove" significa in un determinato linguaggio di programmazione. Il sistema di tipo di un linguaggio di programmazione definisce essenzialmente la propria relazione di sottotipazione, che potrebbe essere banale. A causa della relazione di sottotipazione, un termine può appartenere a più di un tipo. Il sottotipazione è quindi una forma di polimorfismo di tipo. Nella programmazione orientata agli oggetti il termine 'polimorfismo' è comunemente usato per riferirsi esclusivamente a questo polimorfismo di sottotipo, mentre le tecniche del polimorfismo parametrico sarebbero considerate la programmazione generica.
