Le macchie solari sono fenomeni temporanei sulla fotosfera del Sole che appaiono visibilmente come macchie scure rispetto alle regioni circostanti. Se il tramonto fosse isolato dalla fotosfera circostante sarebbe più luminoso della Luna. Le macchie solari si espandono e si contraggono mentre si muovono sulla superficie del Sole e possono essere così piccole come 16 chilometri e grandi come 160.000 chilometri di diametro, rendendo i più grandi visibili dalla Terra senza l'aiuto di un telescopio. Possono anche viaggiare a velocità paragonabili di poche centinaia di metri al secondo quando emergono per la prima volta sulla fotosfera solare.
