Il software di sistema è un software informatico progettato per operare e controllare l'hardware del computer e per fornire una piattaforma per l'esecuzione del software applicativo. ▪ Il sistema operativo consente alle parti di un computer di lavorare insieme eseguendo attività come il trasferimento di dati tra la memoria e i dischi o l'output di rendering su un dispositivo di visualizzazione. Fornisce inoltre una piattaforma per eseguire software di sistema di alto livello e software applicativo. ▪ Un kernel è la parte centrale del sistema operativo che definisce un'applicazione API per i programmi delle applicazioni e un'interfaccia ai driver di periferica. ▪ I driver di periferica come il BIOS del computer e il firmware del dispositivo forniscono funzionalità di base per gestire e controllare l'hardware collegato o incorporato nel computer. ▪ Il software di utilità consente di analizzare, configurare, ottimizzare e mantenere il computer. ▪ Un'interfaccia utente "consente agli utenti di interagire con un computer". Fin dagli anni '80 l'interfaccia utente grafica è stata forse la più comune tecnologia di interfaccia utente. L'interfaccia della riga di comando è ancora un'alternativa comunemente utilizzata. In alcune pubblicazioni, il termine software di sistema comprende anche strumenti di sviluppo software.
