Techno è una forma di musica elettronica di ballo che è emersa a Detroit, nel Michigan, negli Stati Uniti durante la metà degli anni '80. Il primo uso registrato della parola techno in riferimento ad un genere specifico di musica è stato nel 1988. Molti stili di techno ora esistono, ma il techno di Detroit è visto come il fondamento su cui sono stati costruiti diversi sottograndi. Il produttore pionieristico Juan Atkins cita la frase di Toffler "ribelle techno" come lo stimola a usare la parola techno per descrivere lo stile musicale che ha contribuito a creare. Questa miscela unica di influenze allinea techno con l'estetico definito come afrofuturismo.
