Il tegmentum è un'area generale all'interno del sistema cerebrale. Si trova tra il sistema ventricolare e le strutture distinte basali o ventrali ad ogni livello. Forma il pavimento del midbrain mentre il tectum forma il soffitto. È una rete multisistema di neuroni che è coinvolta in molti percorsi homeostatici e riflessivi inconsci. Il tegmentum è l'ubicazione di diversi nuclei del nervo cranico. I nuclei di CN III e IV sono situati nella parte tegmentum del midbrain. I nuclei di CN V-VIII si trovano nel tegmentum al livello dei pons. I nuclei di CN IX, X e XII si trovano in quello della medulla.
