Timbuktu, ex Timbuctoo e Timbuktoo, è una città della nazione dell'Africa occidentale del Mali, situata a 20 km a nord del fiume Niger, sul bordo meridionale del deserto del Sahara. La città è la capitale della Regione Timbuktu, una delle otto regioni amministrative del Mali. Nel censimento del 2009 aveva una popolazione di 54.453 abitanti. Partendo come un insediamento stagionale, Timbuktu è diventato un insediamento permanente all'inizio del XII secolo. Un esercito marocchino ha sconfitto il Songhai nel 1591 e ha reso Timbuktu, piuttosto che Gao, la loro capitale . Gli invasori fondarono una nuova classe dirigente, l'arma, che dopo il 1612 divenne praticamente indipendente dal Marocco.
