Una tunicata è un animale marino invertebrato, membro del subfilo Tunicata, che fa parte del Chordata, un phylum che comprende tutti gli animali con cavi nervosi dorsali e notochords. Il subphylum era un tempo chiamato Urochordata, e il termine urochordates è ancora usato a volte per questi animali. Alcune tunicate vivono come individui solitari, ma altri replicano in erba e diventano colonie, ogni unità conosciuta come zooid. Sono alimentatori filtranti marini con una struttura corporea ricoperta di acqua e due aperture tubolari, conosciute come sifoni, attraverso i quali si disegnano e espellono l'acqua. Durante la loro respirazione e l'alimentazione, prendono l'acqua attraverso il sifone effettivo e espellono l'acqua filtrata attraverso il sifone d'erogazione. La maggior parte delle tunicate adulte sono sessile e sono permanentemente attaccate a rocce o altre superfici dure sul fondo dell'oceano; Altri, come salpa, doliolidi e pirosomi, nuotano nella zona pelagica del mare come adulti. Varie specie sono comunemente conosciute come squirt di mare, maiale di mare, fegato di mare, o tulipani di mare. La Tunicata appare per la prima volta nel record fossile nei primi anni del Cambriano.
