Il discorso visibile è il sistema di scrittura usato da Alexander Melville Bell, che è stato conosciuto a livello internazionale come insegnante di discorsi e corretta elocution e un autore di libri su questo argomento. Il sistema è composto da simboli che mostrano la posizione e il movimento della gola, della lingua e delle labbra mentre producono i suoni del linguaggio ed è un tipo di notazione fonetica. Il sistema è stato usato per aiutare i sordi nell'apprendimento di parlare. Nel 1864 Melville promuove le sue prime opere sul discorso visibile, al fine di aiutare i non udenti a imparare e migliorare il loro discorso. Per contribuire a promuovere il linguaggio, Bell ha creato due forme brevi scritte utilizzando il suo sistema di 29 modificatori e toni, 52 consonanti, 36 vocali e una dozzina di diphthongs: sono stati nominati World English, simile all'alfabeto fonetico internazionale, , Utilizzato come forma di stenografia per gli stenografi. Le opere di Melville sul Visible Speech sono diventate molto note e sono state descritte da Édouard Seguin come "... una invenzione più grande del telefono del figlio Alexander Graham Bell".
