Un podcast è un supporto digitale costituito da una serie episodica di file audio, video, PDF o ePub sottoscritti e scaricati tramite la sincronizzazione web o in streaming online su un computer o un dispositivo mobile. La parola è un neologismo e portmanteau derivato da "broadcast" e "pod" dal successo dell'iPod, in quanto i podcast audio vengono spesso ascoltati su lettori multimediali portatili. Merriam Webster definisce Podcast: un programma disponibile in formato digitale per il download automatico su Internet Un elenco di tutti i file audio o video associati a una determinata serie viene mantenuto centralmente sul server del distributore come un feed web e l'utilizzatore o l'ascoltatore impiega Software applicativo client specifico, noto come podcatcher, che può accedere a questo feed web, controllarlo per gli aggiornamenti e scaricare i nuovi file della serie. Questo processo può essere automatizzato in modo che i nuovi file vengano scaricati automaticamente, che può sembrare all'utente come se il contenuto venisse trasmesso o "spinto" a loro. I file vengono memorizzati localmente sul computer dell'utente o su un altro dispositivo pronto per l'uso in modalità offline, consentendo un accesso semplice e conveniente al contenuto.
