Nella dinamica del fluido, un vortice è una regione all'interno di un fluido dove il flusso è per lo più un movimento di filatura intorno ad un asse immaginario, diritto o curvo. All'interno di tale vortice, la velocità del fluido è più grande vicino all'asse immaginario e diminuisce in proporzione inversa alla distanza da essa. La vorticità è molto alta in una regione nucleare che circonda l'asse e quasi zero nel resto del vortice; Mentre la pressione scende bruscamente quando si avvicina a quella regione. Una volta formati, i vortici possono muoversi, allungare, torsione e interagire in modi complessi.
