Un fiore di campo è un fiore che cresce in natura, il che significa che non è intenzionalmente seminato o piantato. Eppure i prati di "pascolo" di alcune specie miste vengono venduti in pacchetti di semi. Il termine implica che l'impianto probabilmente non è né un ibrido né una cultivar selezionata che sia in qualche modo diversa dal modo in cui appare in natura come pianta nativa, anche se cresce dove non sarebbe naturalmente. "Wildflower" non è un termine esatto. Termini come le specie nativi, le specie esotiche o meglio introdotte, alcune delle quali sono etichettate come specie invasive, importate e naturalizzate sono molto più accurati. Nel Regno Unito, l'organizzazione Plantlife International ha istituito nel 2002 lo schema County Flowers per cui i membri del pubblico hanno nominato e votato per un emblema fiorito selvatico per la loro contea. L'obiettivo era quello di diffondere la consapevolezza del patrimonio delle specie autoctone e della necessità di conservazione, in quanto alcune di queste specie sono in pericolo. Ad esempio, Somerset ha adottato il Cheddar Pink, Londra il Rosebay Willowherb e Denbighshire / Sir Ddinbych in Galles il raro Woundwort di Limestone.
