Witwatersrand
Il Witwatersrand è una lunga 56 chilometri di scarpata a nord della provincia di Gauteng del Sudafrica. È costituito da una roccia sedimentaria di quartzite resistente all'erosione, su cui diversi fiumi che scorrono a nord formano cascate che rappresentano il nome "Witwatersrand" che significa "crinale di acque bianche" in Afrikaans. Questa scarpata in esecuzione orientale-ovest può essere tracciata con un solo angolo tra Bedfordview ad est, attraverso Johannesburg e Roodepoort, a Krugersdorp in Occidente. La scarpata forma il bordo settentrionale di un altopiano largo da 7-10 km che si erge a circa 200 metri sopra le pianure circostanti dell'Higherveld. L'intera struttura a plateau è anche spesso chiamata "Witwatersrand". L'altitudine dell'altipiano sopra il livello del mare è tra i 1700-1800 m. L'altopiano di Witwatersrand forma un divario continentale con la corsa verso nord che scende nell'Oceano Indiano attraverso i corpi del Coccodrillo e del Limpopo, mentre la corsa verso sud scava attraverso la Vaal nel fiume Orange e infine nell'Oceano Atlantico.
