Pacemaker cardiaco
Un pacemaker è un dispositivo medico che emette impulsi elettrici trasmessi attraverso elettrodi che sono in contatto con i muscoli del cuore per regolare il battito cardiaco. Il dispositivo elettronico miniaturizzato emette un'eccitazione regolare del ritmo per un cuore con centri fisiologici incapaci di fornire una frequenza cardiaca normale. Una delle condizioni più comuni che portano alla necessità di utilizzare un pacemaker è chiamata brachicardia, ossia la frequenza cardiaca è troppo bassa per soddisfare le esigenze del corpo. I primi pacemaker appaiono e sono stati impiantati nel 1958 da Siemens-Elema in Svezia.
