Testis

La ghiandola o testicolo è la struttura situata su entrambi i lati del pene dagli organi riproduttivi maschili. Le ghiandole hanno ruoli come la secrezione dell'ormone testosterone, la produzione di sperma e lo sviluppo di alcune caratteristiche fisiche specifiche degli uomini. Le due ghiandole sinistra e destra situate sul lato sinistro e destro dello scroto fanno parte dei dotti dello sperma e contengono un gran numero di strutture vascolari. Lo scroto è una caratteristica molto importante in termini di mantenimento della funzione spermatica. Le cellule spermatiche sono influenzate negativamente dalle variazioni di temperatura e devono trovarsi in un ambiente di circa 2 gradi più basso della temperatura corporea per poter svolgere in modo ottimale la loro funzione. Ecco perché è fuori dal corpo. Il calore all'interno del tronco è inferiore al calore corporeo e si restringe al freddo per prevenire la perdita di calore. Al contrario, si scalda per impedire che le cellule spermatiche vengano esposte a calore eccessivo. Sebbene i testicoli abbiano approssimativamente le stesse dimensioni, sono strutturalmente posizionati leggermente al di sotto del lato sinistro del testicolo sinistro. Ogni testicolo ha condotti di sperma piccoli e molto curvi.

Skrotumun sperm işlevlerini korumak açısından çok önemli bir özelliği vardır. Sperm hücreleri ısı değişikliklerinden olumsuz etkilenirler ve işlevlerini en iyi şekilde yerine getirebilmeleri için vücut ısısından yaklaşık 2 derece daha düşük bir ortamda bulunmaları gerekir. Torbanın vücut dışında bulunmasının nedeni budur. Torbanın içindeki ısı vücut ısısından daha düşüktür ve soğukta büzüşerek ısı kaybını önler. Sıcakta ise aksine sperm hücrelerinin aşırı ısıya maruz kalmalarını önlemek için gevşer. Testisler yaklaşık aynı büyüklükte olmalarına karşın yapısal olarak sol testis sağdakine göre biraz daha aşağıda yer alır. Her testis içinde küçük ve oldukça kıvrımlı sperm kanalcıkları bulunur.
