Os mandingos são um dos maiores grupos étnicos da África Ocidental, com uma população estimada em 11 milhões. São descendentes do Império Mali, que ascendeu ao poder durante o reinado do grande rei mandingo Sundiata Keita. Os mandingos pertencem ao maior grupo etnolinguístico da África Ocidental - o Mandè - que conta com mais de 20 milhões de pessoas. Originários do atual Mali, os mandingos ganharam a sua independencia de impérios anteriores no século XIII e fundaram um império que se estendeu ao longo da África Ocidental. Migraram para oeste a partir do rio Níger à procura de melhores terras agrícolas e de mais oportunidades de conquista. Através de uma série de conflitos, primeiramente com os fulas, levaram metade da população mandingo a converter-se do animismo ao islamismo. Hoje, cerca de 99% dos mandingos em África são muçulmanos, com algumas pequenas comunidades animistas e cristãs. Durante os séculos XVI, XVII e XVIII, cerca de um terço da população mandinga foi embarcada para a América como escravos, após a captura em conflitos. Uma parte significativa dos afro-americanos nos Estados Unidos são descendentes de mandingos.
