세례 요한은 역사가 인 플라 비우스 요세푸스와 성경의 네 복음서 저자들에 의해 인용 된 1 세기 초의 유대인 설교자였습니다. 성 루가 복음의 기록에 따르면 침례 요한은 제사장 인 사가랴와 엘리사벳의 아들인데, 예수의 어머니 인 마리아의 사촌이다. 그는 선지자였으며, 주로 정통 그리스도인들에 의해 약속 된 메시아 인 "예수 그리스도"의 "선두 주자"로 여겨진다. 그의 이름 요한의 중요성은 "하나님은 유익하니"고하는 의미에서 온 것이며, 참회의 침례를 전파한다는 사실에 대해 침례교로 별명을 붙였습니다. 그는 요르단 강에서 예수님을 비롯한 많은 유대인들에게 침례를 베풀었고 나중에 이방인 세례를 유대인의 개종 예식에 도입했다. 그는 6 월 24 일과 8 월 29 일에 출생과 순교가 각각 기독교인에 의해 2 개의 장엄한 곳에서 생겨난 유일한 성자입니다.

João Batista foi um pregador judeu do início do século I, citado pelo historiador Flávio Josefo e os autores dos quatro Evangelhos da Bíblia. Segundo a narração do Evangelho de São Lucas, João Batista era filho do sacerdote Zacarias e Isabel, prima de Maria, mãe de Jesus. Foi profeta e é considerado, principalmente pelos cristãos ortodoxos, como o "precursor" do prometido Messias, Jesus Cristo. A importância do seu nome João advém do seu significado que é "Deus é propício" e apelidaram-no "Baptista" pelo facto de pregar um baptismo de penitência . Baptizou muitos judeus, incluindo Jesus, no rio Jordão, e introduziu o batismo de gentios nos rituais de conversão judaicos, que mais tarde foram adptados pelo cristianismo. É o único santo cujo nascimento e martírio, em 24 de Junho e em 29 de Agosto respectivamente, são evocados em duas solenidades pelos cristãos.
