Dumuzi ou Tamuz era uma antiga divindade suméria. O bíblico Tamuz era um deus dos sumérios conhecido como Dumuzi e pelos egípcios como Osíris. Tamuz tinha como companheira Asterote, a rainha do céu - Ishtar para os acádios, Ísis para os egípcios e Inanna para os sumérios. O relacionamento entre Osíris e Ísis, e as respectivas características deles, correspondem notavelmente ao relacionamento e às características dos babilônios Tamuz e Ishtar. Assim, muitos peritos acham que eles são os mesmos. O eterno apaixonado da deusa Inanna, trata-se de um humano que acabou por se tornar num deus, estando associado à vegetação e à agricultura, porquanto é um deus que morreu jovem, e ressuscitou no ano seguinte. É o oposto de An, um deus verdadeiramente imortal, e por isso mesmo tido por idoso, mas também por culto e experiente. Foi muito cultuado, mais tarde, em Babilónia, sob o nome de Tamuz. A sua lenda está quase de certeza por de trás de outros cultos antigos, designadamente o de Baal nas terras de Canaã e o de Adónis na Grécia Clássica.
