Lat. ădŏlĕre „a transforma în aburi, a evapora”, prin intermediul unei forme
vulg. *
ădŏliāre; cf. ădolĕscĕre „a transforma în vapori” sau „a degaja, a emana”. Reducerea *
aduia › adia pare dificilă (motiv pentru care Rosetti, I, 159 respinge acest etimon); însă
cf. baiur › baier. Pentru sensul 3,

lat. flare. Etimonul *
adūliāre a mai fost propus (DAR; REW 204 a), dar considerat ca
der. vulg. de la
adūlāre „a adula”, ceea ce presupune că sensul 3 este cel primitiv (
cf. împotriva acestei păreri Graur,
BL, V, 86). Este puțin probabilă ipoteza lui Candrea,
Conv. lit., XXXIX, 119 (
cf. Candrea-Dens., 817; Pascu, I, 102), dintr-un
lat. *
adiliāre, de la
ilia; și cu atît mai puțin cea a provenienței din
halare sau
anhelare (Giuglea,
LL, II, 39); din
