हिब्रू बायबलनुसार, पवित्र निवास मंडप हे कनान देशावर विजय मिळवून इजिप्तमधून बाहेर पडण्यापासून ते दैवी अस्तित्वात येण्यासाठी पोर्टेबल निवासस्थान होते. सीनाय पर्वताजवळ देवाने मोशेला दिलेल्या विशिष्ट गोष्टींचे बांधकाम करण्यात आले होते. यामुळे ते इस्राएली लोकांसोबत अरण्यात भटकत होते आणि प्रतिज्ञात देशावर विजय मिळवीत होते. जेरूसलेममधील पहिले मंदिर हे देवाच्या निवासस्थानापुरते आहे सा.यु.पू. 587 साली बॅबिलोनी लोकांनी जेरूसलेमचा व तेथील मंदिराचा नाश झाल्यानंतर तनाखमधील निवासमंडपाचा उल्लेख नाही. टेर्नेनेकेबलचे संपूर्ण वर्णन वर्णन करते की आतील वास्तू एक आंत पवित्र जागेत आहे आणि सोनेरी दिव्याच्या बाजूने बाहेरील कक्ष, शोबडीसाठी टेबल, आणि धूप जाळले जाणारे मंदिर. हे वर्णन साधारणपणे पुरोहित स्त्रोताच्या एका भागाच्या रूपात ओळखले जाते, सहाव्या किंवा पाचव्या शतकामध्ये लिहिलेले असते. बर्याच विद्वानांचा असा दावा आहे की हा मोशेपेक्षा खूपच मागे आहे आणि हे वर्णन सॉलोमनच्या मंदिराचे स्वरूप प्रतिबिंबित करते, तर काही जण असा दावा करतात की हे वर्णन प्रत्यक्ष पूर्व-राजेशाही मंदिरांच्या स्मृती, कदाचित शिलोमधील अभयारण्य होय.
