Pandangan keagamaan dari hati nurani biasanya melihatnya sebagai berkaitan dengan moralitas yang melekat pada semua manusia, kepada alam semesta yang bermanfaat dan / atau ketuhanan. Ciri-ciri ritualistik, mitos, doktrin, undang-undang, institusi dan bahan agama yang pelbagai tidak semestinya bersesuaian dengan pertimbangan pengalaman, emotif, rohani atau kontemplatif mengenai asal dan operasi hati nurani. Pandangan umum sekular atau saintifik menganggap keupayaan hati nurani yang mungkin ditentukan secara genetik, dengan subjeknya mungkin dipelajari atau dicetak sebagai sebahagian daripada budaya.
