Sericin Ia adalah protein yang terdiri daripada gentian cocoon bersama dengan fibroin sebagai salah satu protein ringan (protein keras). Serat cocoon silkworm ditutup dengan tiga lapisan serikin dalam dua helai fibroin. Rasa sutera dan sutera kasar dan keras dilekatkan pada sericin. Apabila ia halus, ia cair dan menjadi tekstur sutera yang unik. Serat cacing sutera ditentukan oleh pewarna karotenoid yang terdapat dalam serikin, dan komposisi asid amino serikin sangat kaya dengan serina.
