Haiku
Haiku (俳句) dengar ialah sejenis puisi Jepun. Nama ini diberikan pada akhir kurun ke-17 oleh Masaoka Shiki dengan menggabungkan perkataan lama hokku (発句) dan haikai (ayat) dalam haikai no renga. Haiku, apabila dikenali sebagai hokku adalah ayat pembuka bagi sebuah bentuk ayat berantai, haikai no renga. Haiku tradisional mengandungi satu corak on 5, 7, 5. Perkataan Jepun on, bererti 'bunyi', selari dengan satu mora, satu unit fonetik yang sama tetapi tidak serupa dengan suku kata bahasa-bahasa seperti bahasa Inggeris. (Perkataan onji ('simbol bunyi') tersalah guna untuk sekian lam dan moji (simbol askara) juga kadang kala digunakan) Sebuah haiku mengandungi perkataan musim (kigo) yang tersendiri yang melambangkan musim dalam yang renga adalah set, atau rujukan kepada alam semula jadi. Haiku biasanya mengandungi tiga baris berbeza, dengan pelanggaran tatabahasa yang nyata, yang dipanggil kireji (huruf terpotong), yang biasanya ditempatkan di akhir lima baris pertama atau tujuh unit bunyi kedua. Dua bahagian haiku ini dipanggil ‘frasa dan fragmen’.
