1. Specii de pasăre din familia corbului (Corvus cornix, Corvus corone, Corvus frugilegus). –
2. Pasăre, cioară-de-cîmp (Corvus monedula). –
3. Poreclă dată de obicei țiganilor. –
Mr. țoară, megl. cioară. Origine necunoscută. Este considerat cuvînt expresiv, care imită croncănitul ciorii (
cf. DAR). Coincide cu
alb. sorë (Meyer,
Alb. St., IV, 72; Philippide, II, 705),
friul. čore, sore „cioară” (REW 2449: Densusianu,
Hlr., 231),
sicil.,
calabr. čaulo, napol. čaolę, tarent. čola, piem. čova, sav. šave, cf. calabr. čola, „găină slabă și mică” (Rohlfs 210).

per. čurē (Popescu-Ciocănel 22),
cuman. čura (Kuun 129), ambele cu sensul de „șoim”; este însă puțin probabilă o relație directă. Este cuvînt dac, după Hasdeu,
Col. lui Traian, 1874, p. 176; anterior
indoeurop., după Lahovary 323. Sensul 3 este rezultatul unei contaminări cu
țig. čor „sărman, nenorocit; țigan” (Graur 138; Juilland 162).
