Tabu adalah larangan sosial yang sangat kuat yang didefinisikan sebagai suci atau tidak tersentuh berkaitan dengan bidang tertentu tingkah laku manusia atau norma tertentu. Ia mula diambil dan digunakan oleh ahli etnologi dari bahasa Polinesia. Ia mempunyai struktur yang bercanggah, kerana ia adalah "benda suci", dua makna bertentangan. Kedua-dua perkara "suci" dan "tercemar" boleh menjadi pantang larang. Sebagai contoh, orang yang "tercemar" harus dipisahkan dari objek "suci". Perkataan yang digunakan dalam banyak kamus terhadap "Tabu" juga membawa dua makna bertentangan.
