Gramatyka łaciny, podobnie jak inne starożytne języki indoeuropejskie, jest bardzo wyolbrzymiona; dzięki temu pozwala na dużą swobodę wyboru słowa. Na przykład femina togam texuit, "kobieta nosi togę", która jest preferowanym porządkiem słownym, może być wyrażona jako femidia texuit toga lub togam texuit femina. W każdym słowie sufiks: -a, -am i -uit, a nie pozycja w zdaniu, oznacza funkcję gramatyczną słowa. Jednakże słowo jest ogólnie rzeczowo-przedmiotowo-czasownikowe, chociaż różnice w tym są szczególnie popularne w poezji i wyrażają subtelne niuanse w prozie. Uważa się, że słowo słowo SVO było prawdopodobnie bardzo popularne w rozmowie, co świadczy o jego znaczeniu w wulgaryce i językach romańskich. W łacinie jest pięć deklinacji rzeczowników i czterech koniugacji czasowników. Łacina nie ma artykułów, a więc na ogół nie różni się między, na przykład "dziewczyną" i "dziewczyną": puella amat oznacza "dziewczynę kocha" i "kocha dziewczynę".
