Aneuploidy
Aneuploidy jest stanem, w którym liczba chromosomów nie jest dokładną wielokrotnością liczby cech charakterystycznych danego gatunku. Ujawny lub brakujący chromosom jest częstą przyczyną zaburzeń genetycznych, w tym ludzkich wad wrodzonych. Niektóre komórki nowotworowe mają również nieprawidłową liczbę chromosomów. Aneuploidy pochodzą podczas podziału komórek, gdy chromosomy nie rozłączają się prawidłowo pomiędzy tymi dwoma komórkami. Dzieje się tak, gdy rozpoczyna się cytokineza, podczas gdy karyokineza jest nadal w toku. Różne gatunki zwykle mają różne liczby chromosomów, a termin "aneuploidia" odnosi się do liczby chromosomów różniących się od zwykłej liczby dla tego gatunku. Uszkodzenia chromosomów występują w 1 na 160 żywych ludzkich urodzeniach. Poza zaburzeniami chromosomu płciowego, większość przypadków aneuploidii powoduje zakończenie rozwijającego się płodu; najczęstszymi dodatkowymi chromosomami autosomalnymi wśród żywych urodzeń jest 21, 18 i 13.
