Atomizm
Atomizm jest naturalną filozofią rozwiniętą w kilku starożytnych tradycjach. Atomiści teoretyzowali, że natura składa się z dwóch podstawowych zasad: atomu i pustki. W przeciwieństwie do ich nowoczesnych naukowych nazwisk w teorii atomu, atomy filozoficzne występują w nieskończonej różnorodności kształtów i rozmiarów, z których każdy jest niezniszczalny, niezmienny i otoczony pustką, w której zderzają się z innymi lub tworzą klaster. Klastry o różnych kształtach, układach i pozycjach dają początek różnym substancjom makroskopowym na świecie. Odniesienia do pojęcia atomizmu i jego atomów znajdują się w starożytnych Indiach i starożytnej Grecji. W Indiach szkoły atomowe Jain, Ajivika i Carvaka pochodzą z VI wieku pne. Nauki Nyaya i Vaishishki później rozwinęły teorie dotyczące łączenia atomów w bardziej złożone obiekty. Na Zachodzie atomizm pojawił się w V wieku pne z Leucippusem i Demokrytem. Niezależnie od tego, czy kultura indyjska wpłynęła na grekę czy na odwrót, czy kwestia ewolucji niezależnej jest przedmiotem sporu.
