Autocefalia
Autocefalia jest statusem hierarchicznego kościoła chrześcijańskiego, którego biskup głowy nie zgłasza do żadnego biskupa wyższego szczebla. Kiedy rada ekumeniczna lub wysoki biskup, np. Patriarcha lub inny prymas, uwalnia władzę biskupa z prowincji kościelnej, podczas gdy nowy niezależny kościół pozostaje w pełnej komunii z hierarchią, do której przestaje należeć, rady lub prymasa przyznaje się autocefali. Na przykład cypryjska cerkiew prawosławia otrzymała autokcefię przez Radę Canon VIII w Efezie i jest arcybiskupa Cypru, który nie podlega żadnej wyższej władzy kościelnej, chociaż jego kościół pozostaje w pełnej komunii z innymi prawosławnymi kościołami prawosławia. Kwestia, kto może udzielić autocefali, jest kwestią kontrowersyjną; w szczególności kościół prawosławny w Ameryce w 1970 r. przyjął autocefalia przez Rosyjski Kościół Prawosławny, ale nie został uznany przez większość patriarchatów.
