Autorotacja to stan lotu, w którym główny system wirników helikoptera lub podobnego statku powietrznego obraca się przez działanie powietrza poruszającego się przez wirnik, podobnie jak silnik autograwitacyjny, a nie silnik napędowy wirnika. Określenie autorotation pochodzi z okresu wczesnego rozwoju śmigłowca w latach 1915-1920, a odnosi się do wirników obracających się bez silnika. W normalnym locie napędzanym powietrze jest wciągane do głównego systemu wirnika z góry i wyczerpane w dół, ale podczas autorotacji powietrze przesuwa się do systemu wirników od dołu, gdy helikopter opuszcza się.
