Topór jest narzędziem, które było używane od tysiącleci do kształtowania, dzielenia i cięcia drewna; do zbierania drewna; jako broń; i jako symbol ceremonialny lub heraldyczny. Uchwyt topora działa jak dźwignia umożliwiająca użytkownikowi zwiększenie siły przy krawędzi tnącej - nie używając pełnej długości uchwytu, jest znany jako dławienie topora. Do drobnego rozdrabniania używając bocznego topora to czasami pozytywny efekt, ale w przypadku ścinania podwójnym ramieniem zmniejsza się wydajność.
