Koloid
Koloid jest substancją mikroskopijnie rozproszoną w całej innej substancji. Cząstki w fazie rozproszonej mają średnicę między około 1 a 1000 nanometrów. Takie cząstki są zwykle łatwo widoczne w mikroskopie optycznym, chociaż w mniejszym zakresie wielkości może wymagać zastosowania ultramikroskopu lub mikroskopu elektronowego. Jednorodne mieszaniny z fazą rozproszoną w tym zakresie wielkości mogą być nazywane aerozolami koloidowymi, emulsjami koloidowymi, piankami koloidowymi, dyspersjami koloidowymi lub hydrosolami. Cząstki lub kropelki w fazie rozproszonej ulegają w dużym stopniu wpływowi chemii powierzchni obecnej w koloidie. Niektóre koloidy są półprzezroczyste z powodu efektu Tyndalla, który jest rozproszeniem światła przez cząstki w koloidie. Inne koloidy mogą być nieprzezroczyste lub mieć niewielki kolor. Zawiesiny koloidalne są przedmiotem nauki interfejsu i koloidu. To pole badań zostało wprowadzone w 1861 roku przez szkockiego naukowca Thomasa Grahama. Pierwsza definicja koloidu w słowniku jest również nazywana: roztworem koloidalnym, zawiesiną koloidalną. mieszanina zawierająca cząstki jednego składnika, o średnicy pomiędzy 10-7 a 10-9 metrów, zawieszona w fazie ciągłej innego składnika. Mieszanina ma właściwości pomiędzy roztworem i drobną zawiesiną. Inną definicją koloidu jest stała faza zawieszona w takiej mieszaninie. Koloid jest także galaretowatą substancją z pęcherzyków tarczycowych, która posiada hormonalną wydzielinę gruczołu tarczycy.
