Dewaluacją w nowoczesnej polityce pieniężnej jest obniżenie wartości waluty w odniesieniu do tych towarów, usług lub innych jednostek pieniężnych, z którymi wymieniona waluta. "Dewaluacja" oznacza oficjalne obniżenie wartości waluty krajowej w ramach systemu stałych kursów walutowych, w ramach którego władze monetarne formalnie ustalają nową stałą stopę procentową w odniesieniu do obcej waluty referencyjnej. Amortyzacja i dewaluacja są czasem niewłaściwie używane wymiennie, ale zawsze odnoszą się do wartości w kategoriach innych walut. Natomiast inflacja odnosi się do wartości waluty w towarach i usługach. Zmiana wartości nominalnej waluty bez obniżania jej kursu to redenalizacja, a nie dewaluacja czy przeszacowanie.
