Digitalizacja
Digitalizacja lub digitalizacja to reprezentacja obiektu, obrazu, dźwięku, dokumentu lub sygnału przez dyskretny zestaw punktów lub próbek. Wynik jest nazywany cyfrową reprezentacją, a dokładniej cyfrowym obrazem, dla obiektu i cyfrowego formularza, dla sygnału. Ściśle mówiąc, digitalizacja oznacza po prostu przechwytywanie sygnału analogowego w formie cyfrowej. W przypadku dokumentu termin oznacza śledzenie obrazu dokumentu lub przechwytywanie "narożników", w których linie kończą się lub zmieniają kierunek. McQuail identyfikuje proces cyfryzacji mającej olbrzymie znaczenie dla ideałów komputerowych, ponieważ "pozwala na przenoszenie informacji we wszystkich formatach z taką samą wydajnością, a także mieszaną".
