Dimmery są urządzeniami służącymi do zmiany jasności światła. Poprzez zmianę kształtu napięcia nałożonego na lampę można zmieniać natężenie światła. Chociaż urządzenia różnokomorowe są wykorzystywane do różnych celów, termin "ściemniacz" jest zazwyczaj zarezerwowany dla tych, które mają sterować mocą świetlną z żarówek i diod świecących rezystancyjnych, halogenowych i kompaktowych. Potrzebny jest bardziej wyspecjalizowany sprzęt, aby przyciemnić świetlówki, parę rtęci, stan w stanie stałym i inne oświetlenie łukowe.
