Podwójny węzeł
Podwójne wiązanie jest emocjonalnie niepokojącym dylematem w komunikacji, w którym dana osoba otrzymuje dwa lub więcej sprzecznych komunikatów, a jedna wiadomość neguje drugą. Powoduje to sytuację, w której pomyślna odpowiedź na jedną wiadomość powoduje niewłaściwą odpowiedź na drugą, więc osoba ta będzie automatycznie pomyłka niezależnie od odpowiedzi. Związanie podwójne występuje wtedy, gdy człowiek nie może stawić czoła naturalnemu dylematowi, a zatem nie może go rozwiązać ani też nie zrezygnować z sytuacji. Teoria wiązania podwójnego została po raz pierwszy opisana przez Gregory'ego Batesona i jego kolegów w latach pięćdziesiątych. Wiązania podwójne są często wykorzystywane jako forma kontroli bez otwartego przymusu - używanie niejasności sprawia, że zarówno trudno reagować, jak i się oprzeć. Podwójna wiążąca na ogół obejmuje różne poziomy abstrakcji w kolejności komunikatów, a komunikaty te można jednoznacznie lub domyślnie określić w kontekście sytuacji lub mogą być przenoszone przez ton głosu lub języka ciała. Dalsze komplikacje pojawiają się, gdy częste podwójne wiążące są częścią trwającego związku, do którego dana osoba lub grupa jest popełniona.
