Drosophila jest rodzajem małych much, należących do rodziny Drosophilidae, której członkowie są często nazywane muchami owocowymi lub pomaranymi, muchami z orzechów lub muchami winnymi, co wskazuje na charakterystyczne cechy wielu gatunków, które mogą przetrwać nad przepełnionym lub gnijącym owocem.
